Weights

This is probably one of the deciding factors when choosing a tent. The stated weights can be a little confusing, however, since different manufacturers sometimes state the minimum weight, while others specify packaged weight as their standard. The fact that the borderline between these two can be a little vague does not help the issue, either.

Differences in weight between tents of the same model can occur depending on varying thickness of the coating on the fabric. This is rarely more than 100 grams either way. Tests in trade magazines unfortunately contribute to the chase for the lowest weights, resulting in the temptation to skimp with amenities or downright necessities. Low weight in comparison to other models is often evaluated here as something positive without considering the consequences on safety, ease of handling or longevity of the tent!

We believe that stating minimum and packaged weights gives the best information to a prospective buyer provided it is made clear where the difference lies. With minimum weight we mean inner tent, flysheet and poles, while packaged weight indicates everything you get when purchasing the product. It is useful to know how many pegs are necessary to pitch your tent, and what accessories are supplied. The bigger the difference between minimum and packaged weight, the better it is equipped: with different stuff bags for your tent, poles, pegs, plenty of accessories, spare parts and instructions. With this information you can truly compare. On some trips you will know how to determine the weight you carry by taking only a minimum of accessories, while on others you might want to add extras like snow pegs or ground cloths.

We regularly check minimum and packaged weights to make sure that nothing in the manufacturing process alters the weight of the tents. It is important, though, that not only weight is taken into consideration when choosing a tent, but also features that determine safety, space and ease of handling.
